Park Lane
Cricket for everyone at West Bretton
West Bretton Cricket Club has been at the heart of our community since 1907. Based in the beautiful village of West Bretton, Wakefield, we are an inclusive, volunteer-run club open to everyone — a place where sport, friendship, and community spirit thrive. Today, we proudly field three senior cricket teams, competing in both the South Yorkshire and Barnsley Cricket Leagues, alongside offering junior cricket for Under 9s, 11s & 13s. We also host women’s games as well as representative fixtures. We are busy! But we’re more than just a cricket club — we’re growing into a true multi-sport hub! In 2021, we expanded to include football, and now boast two senior football teams, plus junior squads for Under 9s all the way through to U13s. Our girls team plays at the club! Our outfield transforms into a training and match pitch during suitable weather, welcoming players of all abilities. We pride ourselves on being a diverse, welcoming club where boys and girls alike can enjoy sport in a safe, supportive environment. Beyond the playing fields, we bring people together through events like parties, community gatherings, and the West Bretton Golden Jubilee Picnic — helping build stronger community bonds. Every part of our club is powered by volunteers, passion, and the belief that sport can change lives.

We are thrilled to announce that our “Securing Cricket at Park Lane” crowdfunder has been a huge success! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters and the backing of Sport England’s Movement Fund, we have raised £33,582 — including a £15,000 grant from Sport England.
This funding will allow us to install three new hybrid cricket pitches, safeguarding the future of cricket at Park Lane for juniors, women’s and men’s teams, schools, and the wider community.
A huge thank you goes to everyone who donated, shared our campaign, or got involved. Together, we are ensuring that West Bretton Cricket Club continues to thrive as a community hub where sport, friendship, and opportunity flourish.

West Bretton Cricket Club is delighted to announce that our Sunday XI has secured a well-deserved promotion from Division 2 of the Barnsley & District Cricket League. The team delivered a series of dominant performances throughout a memorable 2025 season, built on a foundation of powerful batting, disciplined bowling, and the fantastic contributions of our emerging young talent.
Captain Smith Leads from the Front
Leading the charge was captain Luke Smith, who had a truly phenomenal season with the bat. The skipper was the league's standout batsman, amassing an incredible 881 runs in 15 innings. He finished with a sensational average of 62.93, including four magnificent centuries, three half-centuries, and a top score of 146. His consistent run-scoring was the bedrock of the team's success.
All-Round Excellence and Family Success
The team's success was a genuine squad effort, with several players producing memorable, match-winning performances.
Stephen Ashworth enjoyed a breathtaking season as one of the league's top all-rounders. He scored a remarkable 523 runs at an average of 74.71, including an unforgettable, mammoth score of 215 not out. He backed this up by taking 14 crucial wickets at an excellent average of just 13.43.
The promotion push was also a real family affair for the Huberys. Father John Hubery had a brilliant season with the ball, taking 16 wickets at a superb average of 15.94, including a fantastic 5-wicket haul (5 for 31). Following in his footsteps, his junior sons also made a huge impact. Jack Hubery was the team's second-highest wicket-taker with 18 wickets, while Ryan Hubery also claimed 5 wickets during the campaign.
Pinder the Spearhead & More Key Contributions
Leading the bowling attack was the formidable Matthew Pinder. He topped the bowling charts with an outstanding 26 wickets at a remarkable average of just 10.50. His season's best figures of 5 for 26 were a particular highlight.
The batting lineup was further bolstered by other key contributors, including fellow junior player Cameron Brampton, who was vital in the middle-order with 243 runs and a high score of 72 not out. David Hoyle (379 runs at 54.14) and Matthew Race (277 runs at a blistering 92.33) also made crucial runs when it mattered.
Congratulations to Luke and the entire Sunday XI squad on their fantastic achievement. We look forward to seeing them embrace the new challenge in Divison 1 next season!
